Work Outfit Series: Black and White Dress

This is the first post of our work outfit series.  Most days, I go to work sans makeup, with my hair in a ponytail, in ill-fitting scrubs, and comfortable sneakers or orthopedic Dansko clogs.  I admit it's nice to be able to roll out of bed and be out the door in less than 5 minutes, but wearing scrubs everyday gets a bit depressing.

Dressing fashionably for the hospital, however, poses quite a challenge.  We hope to cover issues like footwear, jewelry, hair and makeup, etc. in this series.  Since Sarah and I are in different fields, we also hope to give you some differing perspectives as well -- as a surgeon, I dress for the operating room and clinic, whereas Sarah spends more time in the hospital.

While I love Jean's collection of pencil skirts for work, it isn't very practical when you are sitting at a slit lamp.  It's not lady-like to spread your legs while sitting but it does offer more stability than trying to sit side-saddle.  I still wear pencil skirts (and try desperately not to fall off the exam stool) but lately, I've been drawn towards fuller skirt options like this dress.

Shirtdress: Anthropologie.  Black patent wedge heels: Kate Spade (similar here and here).  Bag: Kate Spade (here in other colors)

  2. Very cute and professional!

Perfect length and neckline for work in a clinic/hospital. Also it has a pockets and a belt, 2 things I look for now in my work clothes. Perfect to hold pagers, pens and patient lists!

  3. Very cute! Pencil skirt is totally my go to for work, but I don't have to balance on anything. Also dig the wedges. I swap between my Ann Taylor perfect wedges & Enzo Yasim booties for every day wear.

  4. Love the practicality of your wardrobe choices. What a great print! And wedges are a great alternative to heels.

  5. You two are always tempting me to go out and shop for similar looks! I'm a sucker for black and white graphic prints, so I love the dress. I'm looking forward to this series! I had to take my dad for several visits to a dermatologic surgeon last fall and I was so impressed by her smart skirts and heels (when she wasn't in scrubs, of course.) I'm always on the lookout for comfortable shoes, too, so I'd love to hear what you've found there!
